Priyasri Art Gallery's Association with Akbar Padamsee

The late artist, Akbar Padamsee, had been associated with Priyasri Art Gallery, since 2007. Priyasri Patodia, the proprietor of the gallery, was blessed to have been supported by the artist, over this decade and more. In the past, Priyasri Art Gallery has exhibited and screened his multidisciplinary artworks and movies, at multiple, group and solo, exhibitions and venues, respectively.

In March 2011, Priyasri Art Gallery arranged an exhibition 'The Middle Path', displaying black and white paintings by Akbar Padamsee. In 2012, Priyasri arranged 'Akbar Padamsee, Recents works on Oil on Canvas' and in the next year, in 2013, the gallery arranged another grand show, 'Past Forward, Recent Oil on Canvas by Akbar Padamsee'. The latter exhibition was accompanied by a book launch including a seminal essay by Nancy Adajania, a noted cultural theorist and curator.

Akbar Padamsee was a significant artist in establishing the contemporary scene of Printmaking. In the past, he had practiced Etching under the assistance of Jagannath Mohapatra at the studio in Baroda. In 2010, Priyasri Patodia conceptualized and published a book titled Contemporary Printmaking in India, comprising essays and images of print-works by varied masters like Akbar Padamsee, Jogen Chowdhury, among others. Padamsee's schematic study of anatomy had delivered an intense map to Indian Portraiture in the history of Indian Modern Art.

During the second edition of Kochi Muziris Biennale, in 2014, Priyasri Art Gallery collaboratively screened the movie Syzygy, made by Akbar Padamsee in 1970. Following the journey, in 2016, Priyasri presented an exhibition accompanied by a book launch, sharing the title, Where the Lines Fall. Nancy Adajania and Priyasri Patodia co-authored the book, contributing significant essays. The two books, Past Forward and Where the Lines Fall, are now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art archives.

In 2017, during the Mumbai Gallery Weekend (MGW), ‘Mini Apercu’ exhibition displayed a range of selected monochrome paper works by Akbar Padamsee. Following an amicable collaboration with MGW, in 2020, ‘Judgement in the trial of Akbar Padamsee’ is presently facilitated by Reema Gehi Desai at Priyasri Art Gallery. The show is an archival representation, narrating the court trial against Akbar Padamsee’s Lovers series exhibited at Jehangir Art gallery, in 1954.

The association has nurtured the gallery with immense affection and caring from Akbar Padamsee. And, this, we are assured, will continue to do so.
