About the Exibition
In collaboration with the 2017 edition of India Art Fair, Priyasroi Art Gallery brings together two masters of Indian Modern art, Akbar Padamsee and Jogen Chowdhury. The exhibition titled “Schema” is special as for the first time these master artists are featured in a two-man show.
In Padamsee’s work we see experimentation with form, light and monochrome open vast landscapes and figures with layers of philosophy. Chowdhury's works have lines that are sensuous and unsettling that unravel the intimate, mystical, and political with equal intensity. Each with their distinct visual language, their practices are constructed through deeply personal matrices and schema that governs the evolution of their works.
As mentioned by Michel Faucault, “The history of ideas, then, is the discipline of beginnings and ends, the description of obscure continuities and returns, the reconstitution of developments in the linear form of history. It becomes therefore the discipline of interference, the description of the concentric circles that surround works, underline them, relate them to one another, and insert them into whatever they are not”. From this we can understand how Padamsee’s and Chowdhury’s works create a dialogue of hidden continues that binds their artistic vision while highlighting their singularity.
The show invites the viewers to witness the journey of these artists and how they have developed and changed the Indian art scene.
