About the Exibition
We are thrilled to present the Mumbai Billboard Bus Shelter Project, a public art initiative in collaboration with MCGM, the Urban Heritage Committee of Rotary Club of Bombay, and Priyasri Art Gallery. This initiative celebrates Mumbai’s recent recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Film which is an honour for every Mumbaikar.
This unique project transforms 15 bus shelters along South Mumbai spanning from Mantralay to Worli Sea Face to Nariman Point into alternative art spaces. Each shelter will feature artworks by 15 distinguished and emerging artists whose lives and practices are rooted in Mumbai.
The project aims to bring contemporary art into the everyday lives of Mumbaikars, bridging the gap between art and the public. A QR code on each shelter will allow passersby to interact with the artworks digitally, making art not just visible but also accessible.
Beyond celebrating the UNESCO title, the initiative is a tribute to Mumbai’s enduring spirit. It honours the poetic resilience of a city that has persevered through countless challenges, including the pandemic, with unity and determination. Public art here becomes a medium to restore connection, foster cultural dialogue, and uplift community morale.
Historically, Mumbai’s urban art has ranged from commemorative sculptures to large-scale murals. While public engagement with art has grown, it often remains confined to specific spaces. This project aims to dissolve those boundaries by integrating art into the daily rhythm of the city’s working-class commuters who tirelessly keep Mumbai moving. Through this initiative, we invite everyone to experience art as a shared language of hope, unity, and creativity, echoing the soul of Mumbai itself.
