About the Exibition
Acute Times presents a compelling showcase of contemporary works from the vibrant studios of Baroda—long regarded as the epicenter of modern Indian art. Baroda’s legacy as a cultural and artistic hub is rooted in its deep engagement with evolving artistic vocabularies—from narrative modernism to postmodern activism, minimalism, kitsch, pop, and mediatic realism.
The exhibition draws a conceptual parallel between the acute angle—small, sharp, and less than 90°—and the sharp, piercing reality of contemporary times. It reflects the immediacy and discomfort of waking to headlines of economic downturns, layoffs, bankruptcy, unsold goods despite steep discounts, and the relentless erosion of natural resources. These realities are juxtaposed with questions around consumption, depletion, and the cyclical nature of existence.
In this climate of uncertainty, artists from Baroda respond through varied mediums and perspectives, exploring both personal and collective anxieties. Their works serve as visual critiques, metaphors, and reflections on the socio-political turbulence that defines our present moment. While rooted in a specific geography, the themes resonate universally—marked by sharp observations, criticality, and the acute tensions of survival and hope.
This exhibition not only continues Baroda’s storied contribution to Indian art but also becomes a mirror to our acute times—challenging, poignant, and inescapably real.
