About the Exibition

The Night the Writing Fell Silent presents the second edition of Jogen Chowdhury’s solo exhibition, presented within the Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery as part of Art Night Thursday on 9 March 2023. This new ensemble of works draws upon the artist’s oeuvre of over fifty-years, weaving together his distinctive visual idiom with the essence of memory, folklore, and contemporary experience.

Chowdhury is celebrated as one of the towering figures in modern Indian art for his mastery of lines and forms. His works inhabit a space where craft, tradition, mythology and modernity come together. The show delves into a deeper introspection of his recent works that combined modern and traditional folkloric aesthetics. His figures are sensorially rich and layered with both the intimate and the universal that flows between remembrance and imagination. The beings in his imaginaries work as torchbearers, to a world perhaps out of reach or lost to perception, or a world to come.
